Intro
EV Drivers are interested to understand the energy mix composition of the EV charge stations and want to know whether they are charging 'green'. Regulators are also pushing for this information to be made publicly available.
In the Netherlands from January 1st. 2022, there is new regulation that requires CPOs to provide the above information for public charge points where the CPO is in control of the energy mix. There is an exemption for publicly accessible that are on private ground where CPOs can't readily control the energy product.
In OCPI, as part of the Location object, there is already a provision for an 'Energy Mix'. This includes
- energy source (e.g. wind, solar etc.)
- Energy product name
- CO2 equivalent emissions
Process
Step 1 - Energy Profile overview
The Energy Mix Profile contains all the relevant information and will be an object that can be linked from the Location record. We expect that CPOs will have some Energy Mix Profiles since they often have central agreements.
On the left menu, under CPO Assets, click on 'Energy Mix Profiles'.All existing Energy Mix Profiles are shown.Click on 'add Profile' to create a new one or select on an existing one to edit it.
Step 2a - Create Energy Profile
Add relevant information. Except for the name, any information is optional, however, the total energy composition has to add up to 100%.
Field | description |
Name | Internal name of the Energy Mix. This will be visible on the Location object |
Energy Sources | The Energy source fields are based on OCPI structure. In order to save te Energy Mix profile, the total needs to add up to 100%. .in OCPI there is a boolean field called 'is_green_energy'.If the mix is 100% renewable, then this field will be populated as true |
Energy Supplier | Name of the energy supplier, delivering the energy for this location or tariff |
Energy Product Name | Name of the energy suppliers product/tariff plan used at this location |
Environmental impact | Key-value pairs (enum + percentage) of nuclear waste and CO2 exhaust of this location’s tariff |
Description | Internal description to help Operations understand when to use this energy Mix. It will be shown in the dropdown |
Step 2b - Updating Energy Mix Profile
Very similar to creating, however an important feature is that it will update all linked Locations.
Updating an Energy Mix Profile (i.e. updating the supplier name or energy source) will update this for all linked Locations. It is not needed to update Energy Mix per Locaton
Example:You have created Energy Mix Profile A.Locations G and H have Energy Mix Profile A.Updating e.g. the Supplier name in Energy Mix Profile A will update that information for Locations G and H.
Step 3 - Link Location with Energy Mix Profile
To Link the Energy Mix to a Location, go to the Location object and select the edit option.
In the Energy Mix Profile section, Users can search for the energy mix. The Name and the Description are shown.Select it and save the Location.
Step 4a - View Energy Mix In Location object
On the location object, an information box appears with the selected Energy Mix.Hovering over the box will indicate the detailsClicking on it will bring the User to the detailed Energy Mix page

Step 4b - View Energy Mix In Location table
In the Locations table/overview, a new column called 'Energy Mix' has been added. The field is not also available in the CSV export.
General
Regulation
CPOs are responsible to provide the correct and accurate information per Location.
As of writing, this was only mandatory for the Netherlands for publicly available Charge Locations, but there are exceptions.
Updating Energy Mix
Updating an Energy Mix Profile (i.e. updating the supplier name or energy source) will update this for all linked Locations. It is not needed to update Energy Mix per Locaton
Exposure on Apps and OCPI
The Energy Mix information will be shared across roaming platforms via OCPI. It is not in GreenFlux control whether this information will be provided.
On the Charge Assist App, as part of the Location details, Users can view the Energy Mix.
Permissions
Energy Mix Profiles can only be created/edited by a User with the 'CPO Manager' Role. This is limited to a few number of people so that unnecessary created or accidental updating is avoided.
On the Location object it can be added by the same Roles that allow editing a location currently.
CS Importer
The ID for the Energy Mix to be used in the Charge Station Importer can be found on the Details page. Its a longer alphanumerical set 'Energy Mix Profile ID'
