Introduction to Ad-hoc Payments

Introduction to Ad-hoc Payments for Charging Point Operators

As the electric vehicle (EV) market continues to grow, accessibility and convenience in charging infrastructure become essential. One critical aspect is enabling seamless payments for EV drivers. While subscription-based charging is common, many Charging Point Operators (CPOs) also need to support ad-hoc payments for users who prefer one-time transactions without a contract. This initiative is in compliance with the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), which mandates transparent, accessible, and standardized payment methods at public charging points. Greenflux offers two primary methods for ad-hoc payments: payment terminals and and/or QR code.

1. Payment Terminals

Payment terminals at charging stations provide a familiar and straightforward way for EV drivers to pay for their charging sessions. These terminals support various payment methods, including:

  • Card payment: Debit card or Credit card issued by Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.
  • Contactless payments: NFC-enabled cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay
  • RFID-based transactions

Greenflux now works with several payment terminal providers to offer this solution. For CPOs, Greenflux offers three options to connect to the payment terminal :

  1. Cloud-to-Cloud Integration — GreenFlux’s cloud system connects directly to the payment terminal’s cloud, enabling swift, secure transactions through a seamless software link. Learn more: Payment Terminal - Cloud to Cloud Integration
  1. Hardware-to-Hardware Integration – GreenFlux communicates directly with the charge point and payment terminal hardware using OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) messages, making for a straightforward, hardware-driven solution. Learn More link
  1. OCPI Integration – GreenFlux initiates sessions via an OCPI (Open Charge Point Interface) roaming connection managed by a third party, which interfaces with the payment terminal’s API to facilitate transactions across networks. Learn more: Payment Terminal - OCPI-based

Each option is designed to provide a smooth, frictionless payment experience for users. To learn more about onboarding the right contactless payment solution for your network, reach out to your GreenFlux representative.

2. QR Code (via Direct Pay or App)

Greenflux also offers a digital-first approach to ad-hoc payments, allowing users to pay directly via a mobile-friendly interface. This method includes:

  • Scanning a QR code displayed on the charging station
  • Being redirected to a secure web-based payment page
  • Supporting payment method : Mastercard, VISA, American Express, Google Pay and Apple Pay

This approach enhances user experience by enabling remote payment and reducing reliance on additional hardware.
